Trump's Progressive Warning Misses The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
