Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
